Not surprising you don't understand; I was dead wrong. I found a
section of the book that seemed to describe the Tk features you said
were missing. I failed to notice that the section was not in the
chapter on creating widgets, but in the chapter on creating Tcl
commands. I withdraw everything I said about Tk. I go to hack some
code, to find out if anything else I said really makes sense.
