Ok, let me rephrase, you never have to apply the _external_ patch inexactly.
I am referring to the human readable things people post to mailinglists.
Internally you do something equivalent to a merge yes, and that is inexact,
but here you have access to all sources so you won't have to rely on doing
inexact patching by having the context untouched.
Anyhow, I don't have time to go into this right now, but I will try to
find the time to do so later on this week.
