I hope the spam wasn't me! I put a link to my own site b/c I couldn't
think of anything else.
The most interesting thing to me about reddit is the idea that I am
training a filter that is going to determine what items are recommended
for me. I found myself going back to the site just to vote on things,
hoping it would benefit me later.
Maybe there could be a way for users to set up a preference for items
submitted with certain tags. So, for example, in an "options" form I
might give a +1 to any items about programming, so that they would
automatically bubble to the top for me. This would only be for me; not
casting a vote that would affect other users. I might give a -1 to any
items that have been tagged political. It seems to me like the effects
of your choices would be more obvious. With reddit, I can't say that
I've noticed any impact from voting on my recommended page. This might
also keep newcomers from being turned off because the site has already
skewed a certain direction. For example, I haven't recommend reddit to
many people because it seems to only be almost exclusively about lisp
and programming. My wife might like the service if she could tailor it
to her interests.
