probably you could begin where you are.
gnu emacs in cvs can act as a server.
emacs since forever can act as a client.

if/when emacs (and emacs lisp) is no longer entirely suitable, you can
incrementally convert the heavy bits of your design to use scheme or
common lisp, keeping emacs as a transparent proxy and "control monitor"
(insert favorite buzzword here).

then you can hire underemployed hackers to collaborate on Cool Stuff.
