I said

  (require :asdf-install)

and SBCL happily loaded the "so-called 'portable'" version.  That was
an SBCL from Debian, BTW, which announces itself as "0.9.3" but is
"0.9.4.65-1" according to the Debian package system.  I tried to
upgrade to the latest unstable package (0.9.5.9-1) but that doesn't
install because I have a 2.4 kernel.
