whither "sandbox"?

Well, we're not actively trying to discourage it. If somebody says
"sandbox", then we all know what they mean, and nobody scolds anyone
for saying it.
But I hesitate to say that "the term 'working copy' is just
subversion's name for a 'sandbox'", because the term 'sandbox' is too
general. It's not always about version control. For example, in
companies where web-based-software is developed (like my own), people
often get private web servers for development and testing, often
referred to as 'sandboxes'. Or, the term can be overly specific as
well: I've heard people refer to private branches as 'sandboxes'.
