   The original statement was correct.  In C, \n is *ALWAYS* just a LF.  It
has to be.  Saying:

  char c = '\n';

wouldn't work if \n was two characters!
   That being said, I propose that "\n" (newline) be a newline, and "\r"
(carriage return) be whitespace.  I know of no systems that use *just* "\r"
for new line.  Unix uses "\n", and DOS/Windows usually uses "\n\r" or some
such.  Making \r whitespace doesn't seem to cause any trouble, so why not?
