Born in 1931, Deborah Meier started teaching in public schools in Chicago after she got married and had three children. An opportunity to start a new school came up and she and her family moved to New York. The new school named Central Park East catered to kindergarteners and firstgraders. It expanded to other grades and in time, the Central Park East Secondary School was also started. Fundamental to her philosophy of education is to create a better informed, better equipped, and more engaged person who can play a greater part in their community. Students are given the opportunity to explore, given a wide range of experiences and activities to facilitate learning instead of rote memorization.
