I'm not so interested in what you were taught in school.  I'm curious
about what sounds correct to your ear.  If you were having a casual
conversation on a street corner with somebody, would you actually say
"He seemed stuck on the problem, so I gave him an hint" ?  Would you
say "And then I thought of an unique idea." ?
