This is crazy.  I never run 'make valid' either;  I forget it exists.
Instead, I just run 'make book-html' before I commit.  How is it
possible that I can compile to html, but 'make valid' still fails?
That's bizzare.

Maybe we should change our Makefile so that 'make book-html' (or
really, *any* xslt transform rule) should first always run 'make
valid' beforehand?
