Is the 1.7 complete?

To my knowledge, the 1.7 documentation task is complete.  Unless I hear
otherwise in the next 18 hours or so, I'll branch off the 1.7 version and
kickstart the 1.8 documentation effort.

NOTE TO SELF:  Dear Mike, some of the reference tweaks you made today should
be suitable for backport to the 1.6 version, too.  So backport 'em.
